   Biography

1. 22 June 1980, a day in the history of India, shall be remembered for ages to come. On this Day Captain Sunil was born to Mrs Satya Choudhary and Lieutenant Colonel PL Choudhary at "Saheed Joginder Nagar' in Kathua district of Jammu & Kashmir. Captain Sunil was eldest amongst his three brothers. Nicknamed "Soni" by his family and friends, young Sunil had his schooling in various Kendriya Vidyalayas across the country wherever his father was posted. He did his graduation from Gareware College of Commerce, Pune. Young Sunil was brilliant smart, diligent and an attractive personality in School as well as in College. He scooped away, most of the Prizes/ awards especially in sports and extra-curriculum activities, during the prize distribution ceremony. He had represented Junior Nationals in Swimming (Free Style & back Stroke ) and Diving. He excelled in sports like Football and Boxing too.


   Inspiration to Join Army

2. After graduation he was doing MBA (Marketing) from Pune University. During this time his younger brother, Flt Lt Ankur Choudhary was selected to join NDA. While he was undergoing training in NDA, Sunil used to visit him quite often. He was in Mike Sqn wherein statute of Martyr Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey, PVC of 1/11 GR was installed. Whenever he visited NDA he used to make sure that he has paid his tribute to grate son of India. He used to visit the cabin where Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey has stayed. Behind the cabin door Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey had written " IF I DIE IN THE BATTLEFIELD, PIN MY MEDALS TO MY CHEST, N SAY MY MOM I DID MY BEST". He used to read Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey's final battle story every time he paid visit to NDA.


3. He was highly inspired by the gallant acts of Martyr Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey so he dropped MBA and joined Indian Military Academy on 01 July 2003. During his interview in SSB, at Allahabad he was asked a question by the Interviewing Officer, as to who was his role model. His state answer was Capt Manoj Kumar Pandey, PVC. He did exceptionally well in IMA and scoped four medals in swimming. He was an allrounder and has participated in almost all sports events in school as well as in Academy.


4. In final term at IMA when choices of Arms/ Services were being asked from cadets he gave his first choice as 11 Gorkha Rifles, the Regiment of his 'Idol' and God willing he was allotted the same Regiment. For him it was a 'Dream Come true'. At the passing out parade ceremony he has invited a big band of his guests. He was looking very jubilant as if he had conquered the whole world.


5. Captain Sunil passed out from IMA on 10 Dec 2004 and joined Palatn 7/11 Gorkha Rifles at Fort William Kolkotta in the first week of Feb 2005. He moved to Counter- Insurgency Operation Area during May 2006 and since then he was fighting relentlessly against ULFA in Tinsukia District of Assam.


6. He has done exceptionally well in YO's course and obtained "AX" grading. He was recommended for BSW (O) course for his excellent performance in YO's course. He has also done well in Commando (Officers) course before he moved to Counter- Insurgency Operation Area.


   Sena Medal

7. It is said that Captain Sunil was posted in "A" Coy of the Palatn which was located in most affected area of terrorists activities. Within a span of one month of his taking over the "A" Coy , he killed two Top Action Group Commander of ULFA cadre and became a terror for ULFA Cadre in that area. He was always on the run after the ULFA terrorists. One of his jawan said that he had carried out operations in every corner of his Area of responsibility and never gave a chance to ULFA to breath freely. For his heroism even his enemies would have eternal respect for him. When he kiled two Action Group Commanders of ULFA cadre, he was reported to be on the HIT list of ULFA cadre. Following his previous operations he was attacked twice though unsuccessfully by the ULFA' of 28 Battalion.


8. Captain Sunil was awarded 'Sena Medal' (Gallantry) for his outstanding leadership and repeated acts of gallantry on 26 Jun 2008 (Republic Day).


   From Medal to Fatal Mission

1. 26 Jan 2008, THE REPUBLIC DAY- On this Day Capt Sunil Kumar Choudhary was decorated with SENA MEDAL (Gallantry) In recognition of his exceptional gallantry in a previous operation against ULFA terrorists at Village Naopather MT-0014 in Tinsukia District of Assam.


2. On 27 an 2008 ie the very next day, while he was going to attend a Lunch Party at his CO"s (Col Parmeet Saxena) at Dinjan who was also awarded Sena Medal (Distinguished Service), along with Lt Varun Rathore of 19 PUNJAB. While he was on his way to attend the party, he was diverted to carryout an operation at village Rangagarh. This operation was launched based on a hard intelligence report that 7-9 ULFA terrorists had taken shelter in Mr Balmiki Sonwal and Mr Kalagoty's houses.


3. Capt Sunil immediately left for the operation alongwith one officer (Lt Varun Rathore) and five Jawans and reached village Rangagarh at about 1230-1240 hours. In this operation Capt Sunil was leading part of his column with two Jawans and sent balance (one officer and three Jawans) towards the right side of the village to lay stop.


4. As the cordon was being established, terrorists hiding inside the house started firing indiscriminately and ran outside in a bid to escape, into the surrounding jungle. Capt Choudhary in a quick and bold action immediately gave chase and shot and killed one terrorist. Despite being fired upon by fleeing terrorists he led the chase from the front. In the firefight Capt Choudhary sustained grievous bullet injury in the left side of his chest but retaliated, shot and injured the second terrorist. Despite the injury and while losing blood quickly, in the highest traditions of the Indian Army and with utter disregard for his own safety he chased the third terrorist who had entered the forest. Capt Sunil outflanked the terrorist, cutting off his escape and suddenly came to face to face with him. An extremely intense firefight ensued at extremely close range. Capt Sunil, despite his critical condition, in one final glorious superhuman effort, shot and killed the terrorist and then he succumbed to injury, making the supreme sacrifice in the service of the Nation.


5. He has been awarded KIRTI CHAKRA (Posthumous), the Second Highest Gallantry Award during peace time for his conspicuous cat of bravery.
