IC-64615M CAPT SUNIL KUMAR CHOUDHARY, SM
7/11 GORKHA RIFLES

On 18 Jul 2007, Capt SK Choudhary received information that SS Sgt Polash Moni Rajbonshi, with another ULFA cadre, had been seen in village Simalgurigaon. Officer, along with 01 JCO and 10 OR, left the COB after last light and picked up the trail of the fugitives. Their enquiries led them to Village Nabajyoti, which they reached at approx 0200 hrs on 19 Jul 2007 and cordoned the house where the fugitives were suspected to be staying. Capt Choudhary knocked on the door of the house but the door was not opened. Nk Padam Bahadur Rai, who was covering the rear entrance to the house, knocked there, again to no response. Capt Choudhary covered Nk Padam Bahadur Rai and the NCO knocked the rear door down and was immediately confronted by a terrorist who fired upon the NCO. Capt Choudhary and the NCO quickly rolled away from the entrance and crouching right by the doorway let rip a burst and the terrorist collapsed on the spot. The other terrorist, however, put up a good fight. Later, the terrorist firing all around, made a mad dash for freedom. Even as the fleeing terrorist was firing at about shoulder height, Capt Choudhary and the NCO took careful aim in the poor light and brought him down.

For this act of gallantry and selfless devotion beyond the call of duty, with grave risk to his life, Capt Sunil Kumar Choudhary was awarded the ‘SENA MEDAL’ (Gallantry) on 26 Jan 2008.
